China Nuclear Message to Donald Trump

Published on Dec 11, 2016

China has flown a nuclear-capable bomber outside its borders in a show of force for the first time since US President-elect Donald Trump’s phone call with the president of Taiwan.

The 10-minute telephone call with President Tsai Ing-wen was the first by a US president-elect or president since President Jimmy Carter switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 1979, acknowledging Taiwan as part of “One China”. It led to protests from Beijing.

The Xian H-6 bomber flew along the disputed ‘nine-dash line’ around the South China Sea on Thursday, US officials told Fox News, passing over a number of disputed islands. The officials said it was designed to send a message to the incoming administration.

The Pentagon found out about the flight on Friday and officials said it was the first long-range flight along the demarcation line in more than 18 months – though this sortie extended further than previous ones.

The H-6 is the Chinese version of the Russian Tupolev Tu-16 jet bomber and has been used by China to drop nuclear devices in tests.

China warns US against challenging its actions in South China Sea

Published on Feb 1, 2016

China is accusing the U.S. of seeking maritime dominance in the name of freedom of navigation. The criticism comes after an incident this weekend where a U.S. Navy destroyer sailed within 12 nautical miles of a disputed island in the South China Sea.

CCTV America’s Sean Callebs reports from Washington.Just this past week the US Secretary of State John Kerry was in China in an effort to defuse tensions in the region, clearly having little success.

China maintains most countries oppose U.S. actions in the region, adding that developing nations strongly disagree with this latest display of military might. The United States is flexing its military muscle, sending a warship to the South China Sea over the weekend.

The U.S. Navy destroyer came within a dozen miles of an island that China has claimed. This is the second time in four months an American Navy ship ventured into what China calls its territorial waters. China’s reaction was quick, calling the U.S. action “very dangerous and irresponsible.”

An estimated 5-trillion dollars worth of trade flows through the area each year. And while there are competing claims for regions of the South China by a number of nations, China claims a great deal of the area.

Leaders in Beijing say free and unfettered transport has never been an issue. In a sign of heightened tension, the People’s Liberation Army activated a garrison on the island in the South China Sea on Saturday.

Chinese leaders say the United States is sending its navy vessels into the area in an effort to create dominance in the region.

The conflict in Syria has put Moscow back on the geopolitical map (so to speak), creating an enormous amount of tension with Washington whose regional allies have been left to look on in horror as Russian airstrikes and an Iranian ground incursion dash hopes of ousting President Bashar al-Assad.

A second defense official said the mission, which lasted a few hours, also included Mischief Reef and would be the first in a series of freedom-of-navigation exercises aimed at testing China’s territorial claims.

China’s Foreign Ministry said the “relevant authorities” monitored, followed and warned the USS Lassen as it “illegally” entered waters near islands and reefs in the Spratlys without the Chinese government’s permission.

“China will resolutely respond to any country’s deliberate provocations. We will continue to closely monitor the relevant seas and airspace, and take all necessary steps in accordance with the need,” the ministry said in a statement that gave no details on precisely where the U.S. ship sailed.

“China strongly urges the U.S. side to conscientiously handle China’s serious representations, immediately correct its mistake and not take any dangerous or provocative acts that threaten China’s sovereignty and security interests,” it said.
